Product Review:  Schar Bread

A gluten free bread that is on the shelf next to normal bread.  What?  I have had decent success with Schar products.  They are generally good tasting, hold up well, and are reasonably priced.  When I saw this at HEB, I immediately grabbed it and felt how  soft the bread was.  It was super soft, like normal bread so I had to buy it and try.

I made a sandwich that day for lunch and tried the end piece of bread that nobody touches without toasting it or anything.  It tasted like bread.  It was incredibly amazing.  It did leave a weird texture in my mouth.  Whatever the bread consist of does not dissolve well and sticks to your teeth.

With all these great things said there are some cons.  I have purchased this bread more than once after that time and it has never been as good as the first time.  It's never been as soft, so I am guessing I got a fresh batch that one time.  The bread will stick to your mouth and teeth in a non normal way.   I can't explain it, you'd have to try it.

Unfortunately, after buying this for a month or two, it is now not being carried by HEB.  Even with all the negatives it has still became my favorite bread....that I can no longer find.  Boo!

This is a BLT-avocado sandwich that I made on the bread.  The bread  tastes great toasted as well.  I miss you!

Product Review:  Freschetta Pizza

I have seen this pizza for awhile now but only in the large cheese version.  I am not a cheese pizza fan and never got around to buying it.  I recently moved and wanted to give this pizza a try and could not find it anywhere.  Soon after, I finally found it but in a personal size, aka child version.  Being too small and priced at $6 I never got around to trying it.

Finally, I came across the large version again at Kroger.  This time it was the Pepperoni version.  I pulled it from the shelf quick.  Priced around $10 I was finally ready to try this pizza and it did not disappoint.

This has been the best gluten free frozen pizza I have gotten to try.  I have had the Daiya, Udi's, Russo's, and Amy's version.  This one tasted real close to a standard frozen pizza.  It was great to have that feeling again and I can't wait until I purchase this pizza again.  It is highly recommended!

Product Review:  California Kitchen Pizza

I was beyond excited to find this at Kroger the other day.   I always wanted to try California Pizza Kitchen before I went gluten free but never got around to it.  Now, I finally had a reason to try it.

I've usually only found gluten free frozen pizzas to be topped with cheese, pepperoni, or a vegetable so it was also exciting to try an option like BBQ Chicken.
Picture
Overall, the pizza was okay.  It was priced around $8 I believe which is a little below  the price for other gluten free pizzas.  There was nothing wrong with the pizza but just nothing spectacular about it.  I would eat it again if I wanted a gluten free pizza because of its price and decent taste.

Give it a try if it sounds good.  Otherwise I would not recommend it to someone.

Daiya: Strawberry Cheezecake

I have recently been on hiatus because of an apparent milk intolerance.  After a couple years of being gluten free, I started to have the same symptoms but was not eating gluten foods.   Apparently HEB Spring Water had the milk allergen in them and this was effecting me.  With countless nights of being sick and only eating chicken, salt, and broccoli, I am happy to know it was a milk intolerance.

Anywho, I am happy to find Daiya products.  A gluten free/dairy free dessert is hard to come by.  I am happy to report that Daiya does not disappoint.  The crust uses coconut flour in it and the coconut taste actually goes along great with the cheesecake.  The cheesecake itself was a little small for the $8-$9 price range but I was not disappointed in the taste.  It tasted great.  Which is a great feeling to experience when you have to eliminate two common ingredients in  desserts: gluten, and dairy.

It is not upsetting to pay this price for a product and get something small if it taste like this.  The taste made up for having to pay premium for a gluten/dairy free product.  I wish all products were like this and worth their price.

I recommend Daiya  products and will definitely be trying more of them.

Mikey's Muffins

I recently received a gift card to a natural food store and came across Mikey's Muffins.  These English Muffins were priced at around $5.50 which is pretty standard for some gluten free breads.  I was a little excited to use these for eggs benedict.  Gluten Free breads are a very dangerous game.  Most are tasteless, fall apart easily, or basically on the market just because there is a demand for them.  Let's just say I knew what I may be getting myself into by purchasing these.  They could be lacking flavor, or edibility.   Expecting these annoyances, I overlooked a common annoyance that all shoppers experience.
Picture
Size discrepancies!  These muffins were half the size of the box.  Why not use a half sized box and save money?  They looked like mini waffles if I had to describe the size.  It was not what I envisioned.

Even though I was disappointed in the size, I decided to still try them and hopefully the taste would be wonderful.   I wanted to try a messy egg sandwich on them to see how the bread held up with a runny egg yolk.

Picture
The bun started to fall apart as it absorbed more egg yolk and the mustard I added to my egg sandwich was not helping the matter (I do not know if that is weird or not, but it is my preferred method).

Overall, I would not recommend this product.  It is not worth the extra money we shed out for gluten free products.

Product Review: Daiya Pizza

My sister-in-law told me about Daiya pizza and I finally got around to trying them out recently.   I had been feeling sick to my stomach so I was trying to find a meal that avoids a lot of the common allergens and this one was a hit.  It is gluten free, dairy free, egg free, soy free, and vegetarian.  Wow right!  No way it can be any good.  I was wrong.  Considering how many allergens this pizza avoided I would say this pizza was wonderful.

I added some sliced tomatoes  to mine before cooking it in the oven and topped it with some chopped basil.  I did cook it a little longer than the pizza suggested.  The cheese did not bubble up like I was used to, probably because it wasn't really cheese!  Everything tasted like a normal pizza.  There was no weird, unnatural taste to it.  The crust was crisp.  If you are avoiding all these allergens I am sure you will be pleased.  The pizza is priced at the $9.99 range which is normal for a gluten free pizza of this size.  Considering this pizza avoided four different allergens I would say it is worth the price!

Product Review:  Chebe Cinnamon Roll Mix used for Gluten Free Doughnuts

If you are unfamiliar with Brazilian cheese bread you need to become familiar.  It is naturally gluten free.  They serve these at Brazilian restaurants like chips and salsa.  They are basically balls of bread that have a moist, almost raw-like center.  They taste just like cheese bread.

This is what Chebe has modified to bring enjoyable gluten free mixes over to the United States.  They are amazing!  I really miss doughnuts after going gluten free and these are the only exception I have found instead of eating a doughnut and getting sick later.  I just take the mix and add eggs, oil, and milk to them and form them into 1 inch balls and fry for a couple minutes.  Then you top them with a cinnamon-sugar mix, or make an icing for them and enjoy them as doughnuts.  They have a nice doughy feel because of the moist center and taste like a doughnut.  They beat buying Katz's Gluten Free doughnuts and heating them up in the microwave and melting the glaze.  If you are lucky enough to see these on the shelf be sure and purchase them and satisfy your doughnut craze.

Product Review: Macaroni and Cheese

Annie's Homegrown Gluten Free Macaroni and Cheese is by far the best version I have found to date.  My wife has never complained about eating this.  That is a true test to how it tastes because she has the divine palate of an 8 year old.  I added some cooked spinach to the finished product to add some depth in flavor.  My favorite macaroni and cheese was the Kraft version that came with broccoli to add in it!

Below is a picture of the macaroni and cheese with some pancetta wrapped Salmon.  I always add some butter to the noodles before adding in the cheese mixture.  Then I add Almond Milk to the cheese to thin out the sauce.

I may or may not have mentioned this before, but I despise shopping at Wal-Mart.  Each time that I make the yearly visit I am reminded just why I do not shop at Wal-Mart within a couple of minutes.  Being that I have not shopped at Wal-Mart since turning Gluten Free, yes turning....it is like the Walking Dead, I had a lot of Gluten Free checking up to do.  I was a little excited to find a Great Value Gluten Free version of Macaroni and Cheese.  The price was really great.  The product was just ok though.  It is worth its price but the taste was just not as good as Annie's Homegrown.  I was impressed that these were gluten free rice shells, I have not experienced that before, but the cheese sauce needed a lot of extra work to give it a good flavor.   I do recommend purchasing this but if you can afford the extra dollar I would go with Annie's Homegrown over this.

Product Review: Funfetti Cookies

My favorite cake before going gluten free was funfetti.  These made my day when I saw them on the shelves at HEB with all the other cookie box mixes.  I figured they wouldn't be that great but boy was I surprised.  These have become my wife's favorite cookies, she is not gluten intolerant!  They really are amazing.  They don't fall apart and taste just like the real thing.  Pillsbury did a great job with these cookies.

They also have a funfetti cake mix but that one is not as great as these cookies.  There is a recipe on the box as well for a fruit pizza.  I have tested this fruit pizza as well and say that it is wonderful minus the orange marmalade.  I added some strawberry preserves to make the cream cheese mixture not as tart.  Please forgive the missing piece, I was too excited to try.

Product Review: Perdue Chicken Strips

6/22/2015

Picture
These are by far my favorite gluten free chicken strips that I have found.  Not only are they reasonably priced, hard to come by in the gluten free world, but they also end up being crispy.  The breading does not fall off the chicken like Applegate's gluten free chicken strips.  You also get a lot of chicken strips for under $5.00.  I have found these chicken strips at Target and at Wal-Mart recently.  These chicken strips would be the only reason I would walk into a Wal-Mart for another three years.

Verdict:  They are worth a trip to Wal-Mart
